Sean Durkin is a contemporary British artist born in North Yorkshire in 1963. He is best known for his narrative paintings that combine humour, nostalgia and expressive storytelling, creating artwork filled with character and atmosphere.
Sean’s passion for painting began after an extraordinary childhood experience involving an original L.S. Lowry painting. While Lowry’s work inspired Sean to become an artist, he has developed a distinctive style that is uniquely his own, characterised by storytelling, warmth and playful narrative.
At the age of eight, Sean awoke one morning to discover an original L.S. Lowry painting resting on his family’s mantelpiece. The artwork had been stolen the previous evening by his father, John Durkin, in what would become one of Britain’s most unusual art thefts. Rather than seeking financial gain, the accompanying ransom note demanded improved gallery security, Sunday opening for working people to enjoy art, and, famously, that the local Mayor raffle his underpants for charity.
While the remarkable story captured national headlines, it was the painting itself that left the greatest impression on Sean. Fascinated by Lowry’s distinctive “matchstick” figures and the evocative atmosphere of the scene, he found himself returning to the memory time and again. Years later, that unforgettable image inspired him to pick up a paintbrush and begin creating artwork of his own.
Today, Sean has developed a highly individual artistic style that pays subtle homage to Lowry while remaining unmistakably his own. His paintings are filled with warmth, wit and carefully observed narrative, inviting viewers to discover new details each time they look. Keen-eyed collectors may even spot recurring characters such as a policeman, a robber or the Mayor in his underpants – a light-hearted tribute to the remarkable story that first inspired his artistic journey.
