Chess says ” Under the influence  – We associate this phrase with intoxication. Alcohol, drugs, bad decisions. In reality, countless more types of influence intoxicate us on a daily basis. Influence itself is just a means of creating the ‘context’ that my work focuses on. My portraits usually situate familiar faces directly within their context using a collage of snippets from the media. My new collection expands this concept by exploring the influences that shape each individual; me, you, everyone, not just those in the public eye”.

What influences are we under every day? How can the stories we love as children shape us as we grow up? How are those stories themselves shaped by the society we live in? In each piece, the background is made up of contextual articles, stories, and comic book strips that have influenced the subject of the central portrait. These extracts represent the forces that have shaped who the person has become.

My collection, therefore, aims to highlight the endless chain of influence that exists in our lives.
By reading, talking, socialising, listening, shopping, and living, we are always ‘under the influence.”
