Original watercolours and oils - Paul Franks
I was born in the North East in 1954. After taking a degree in Chemistry, I worked in science and technology until 2014, and have lived in Essex since 1981. I was an enthusiastic painter at school, but gave up in my teens. I began painting again as a hobby in 1986, initially concentrating on watercolour and soon achieved success in local art exhibitions. This encouraged me to exhibit more widely, and to try my hand at other media. Although I have occasionally attended courses, I am largely self taught. I now paint in both watercolours and oils, and occasionally in acrylics and pastels.
I work in a realist style, and my subjects are mainly drawn from the landscape and coastline of Essex and Suffolk. I am inspired by the effect of light and colour in the landscape, and also by the effects of shadows and reflections.
I mostly work from my own photographic references, backed up by notes and sketches. Since taking early retirement, I am spending more time painting en plein air. Recognising the limitations of photography in recording light and colour, I do not believe in ‘copying’ photographs, but use them as references, which can be modfied and interpreted as required to produce the final painting.
I have exhibited widely including with the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of British Artists. At the Essex Open Art Exhibition I was awarded the prize for best work in the 2013 Exhibition.
