Marie was born in Lincolnshire, and can’t remember a time when she didn’t draw and paint. She studied fine art at Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art in Dundee. Marie’s paintings can be found in St Andrews Museum, the Stirling Smith Museum and many private collections across the UK.
Marie paints from her summerhouse studio, which has become a shrine to the great British seaside. Collected over many years, numerous seaside novelties make their way into a variety of her paintings.
Marie describes her art as ‘Alice in Wonderland’ meets seaside kitsch and cites the story as one of her biggest influences – falling down the rabbit hole into a mad world – true escapism. Marie’s other great inspiration comes from her childhood memories of visits to the seaside to Hunstanton, Whitby, Scarborough and Weymouth where she would be spellbound by an array of enticing and mesmerizing colourful sweets in shop windows, and the dazzling sights of amusements and merry-go-rounds.
This latest collection from Marie is called ‘The Candy Carousel Collection’ which is an evocation of those childhood seaside memories.
